Buckwheat Prices Surge on Lower Harvests: When Will Costs Stabilize?

Why Buckwheat is Getting More Expensive

According to Главком: A smaller harvest last year and the seasonal drawdown of stocks ahead of the new crop are driving up buckwheat prices. This is a cyclical pattern, as buckwheat is a niche crop whose production typically falls every five years. With last year's reduced yield and limited import options, reserves by the end of the marketing year are lower than usual.

It's important to note there is no physical shortage of buckwheat on the market; the product is available, but in limited volumes. Buckwheat is a staple in many Eastern European cuisines, making price fluctuations particularly noticeable to consumers. Farmers plan to increase the area sown with buckwheat by 15-20% in 2026, which should positively impact production. Gross output is expected to be close to the level of domestic consumption, approximately 95%.

The Seasonal and Cyclical Nature of Price Hikes

Experts point out that the rise in buckwheat prices follows seasonal and cyclical trends. Taras Vysotskyi noted:

“The increase in buckwheat prices is seasonal and cyclical. Due to last year's smaller harvest and limited import opportunities, stocks at the end of the marketing year are lower. At the same time, there is no physical shortage-the product is present on the market. We expect the situation to stabilize and prices to level out with the new harvest.”

By spring 2026, buckwheat prices in Kyiv could approach 90 UAH per kg, reflecting current market trends. Overall, the buckwheat situation requires attention, as the impact of seasonality and production cycles remains a significant factor for the agricultural sector.

In response to these market changes, it is important to highlight that farmers intend to increase sown areas, which could positively influence price stability in the near future. Increased production is hoped not only to meet domestic demand but also to reduce the price volatility resulting from cyclical changes in buckwheat output. Thus, the food market situation will remain under control, though it will require monitoring amid seasonal shifts.

The current situation in the buckwheat market raises concerns about potential shortages, which could further impact prices as we approach the next harvest.
