India sharply reduces imports of Russian oil: supplies may fall to a minimum
India sharply reduces imports of Russian oil
According to Главком: On January 6, 2023, Reliance Industries announced a halt to shipments of Russian crude oil in January 2023. This could significantly lower Russian oil imports to India to their lowest level in recent years. Having not received Russian oil for the past three weeks, Reliance's refinery in Jamnagar is showing a substantial reduction in supplies.
India has become the largest buyer of Russian oil transported by sea since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. However, imports of Russian oil to India have already fallen to 1.2 million barrels per day in December 2022, a decline of 40% from the peak level in June 2022 when supplies reached around 2 million barrels per day.
This development comes amid warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump about potential increases in import tariffs on Indian goods. It should be noted that the U.S. has already doubled the import duties on Indian goods to 50% in 2022. This may significantly affect economic relations between India and the U.S., as well as the oil market in the region.
Changes in India's foreign policy
The reduction of Russian oil imports by India may indicate a shift in the country’s foreign policy, as it seeks new sources of energy resources amid international pressure and economic threats. As India tries to diversify its energy supply, this could lead to increased interest in alternative markets such as the Middle East or Africa.
At the same time, the increase in tariffs on Indian goods in the U.S. could negatively impact bilateral relations and the Indian economy as a whole.
