Iraqi Man Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity in Killing of 16-Year-Old Ukrainian Girl; Court Orders Psychiatric Treatment
The Incident Involving an Iraqi National
According to Главком: A 31-year-old Iraqi man who pushed a 16-year-old Ukrainian girl from Mariupol onto train tracks has been ruled legally insane due to paranoid schizophrenia. The court in Göttingen has ordered him to undergo psychiatric treatment. The attack occurred on August 11, 2025, at the train station in Friedland, Germany, where the teenager died instantly.
Initially, police believed the incident was an accident. However, the perpetrator later turned himself in and led authorities to the victim's body. After an initial evaluation, he was released, but that same evening, he began exhibiting aggressive behavior. DNA tests later revealed traces of the man on the victim's shoulder. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued for him on suspicion of intentional murder.
The accused first applied for asylum in Germany in August 2022 but was denied. He was scheduled to be deported to Lithuania, but a court rejected the request to detain him for deportation. Subsequently, he re-registered as an asylum seeker at the Friedland reception center.
Tragedies Involving Ukrainian Women Abroad
This case is not isolated. In the United States, Ukrainian woman Iryna Zarutska, who had recently moved to America seeking a better life, was killed. Her body was discovered on August 22 at a light rail station in Charlotte, North Carolina. Another tragedy occurred in Italy, where 18-year-old Ukrainian student Mariia Buhaieva was found hanged from an olive tree. She had been missing since July 4, and her body was located about a kilometer from the tourist village of Carovigno.
These incidents highlight serious safety concerns for Ukrainian women abroad. The growing number of violent acts against Ukrainian women in various countries underscores the urgent need for stronger protective measures. Together, these tragedies show that Ukrainian women seeking refuge or a new life overseas face significant risks, including violence and discrimination. It is critical for host nations to implement effective support and protection mechanisms for vulnerable populations.
The alarming trend of violence against Ukrainian individuals abroad continues to raise significant concerns. Similar to the tragic case in Germany, a series of deadly incidents involving Ukrainian workers has been reported in Poland. These events not only highlight the dangers faced by Ukrainians in foreign countries but also emphasize the need for greater awareness and protective measures.
