A Landmark Property: Castillo de Arcos Goes Up for Sale

According to УНІАН — Туризм: In southern Spain's Andalusia region, the medieval Castillo de Arcos has been listed for sale at €7.9 million. Built in the 11th century, this architectural gem is being offered to buyers for the first time since 1922, with the listing handled by Sotheby's. Perched on a rocky outcrop above the Guadalete River in Arcos de la Frontera, a town in Cádiz province, the castle spans 5,300 square meters. With only a limited number of medieval fortresses available on the open market, this listing is attracting attention from collectors and investors worldwide.

Originally designed as a fortress, it was converted in the 14th century into a residential palace for the Dukes of Arcos. The current owner, the Marquis of Tamaron, Santiago de Mora-Figueroa, has maintained its historic character, supported by restoration efforts carried out over the past hundred years. The castle contains 60 rooms, including 12 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. Noteworthy features include:

  • a 25-meter library
  • vaulted ceilings
  • a terrace with panoramic views

The property is generally not open to sightseers, but it does hold open-house days four times a year.

More Historic Listings in the Market

Beyond Castillo de Arcos, another unusual property is up for sale: Hamburg's Genneberg Castle, listed at €1.1 million. This neo-Gothic castle, built between 1884 and 1887, is often called the smallest castle in the world. It stands on an artificial 15-meter-tall rocky hill beside the Alster, and was originally commissioned by postal official Albert Genneberg.

In Tuscany, meanwhile, owners of villas and historic houses are offering free accommodation to people willing to look after the properties. This reflects a growing appetite for historic architecture and opens unconventional living possibilities for those interested.

The Castillo de Arcos listing, along with these other examples, points to a steadily rising interest in heritage real estate-properties that work both as homes and as investment assets. These kinds of sales create fresh opportunities for collectors, investors, and architecture enthusiasts seeking one-of-a-kind places to live or spend time.
