Italy continues to support Ukrainians until 2027: new residence rules and payments
Update on rules for Ukrainians in Italy
Italy has updated its rules for Ukrainians residing in its territory, extending their support until March 2027. According to the new law, Ukrainians will have the opportunity to continue their stay in the country and receive social services. Law No. 201 stipulates that Ukrainians will be able to extend their residence permits, which is an important step towards ensuring stability and security for those in Italy.
Procedure for renewing residence permit
The procedure for renewing the residence permit, known as permesso di soggiorno, must be completed by March 4, 2026. Appointments for the renewal procedure will begin in January 2026, allowing Ukrainians to plan their next steps. This is important as it will provide a legal basis for their stay in the country amidst ongoing support from the Italian government.
Moreover, Ukrainians in Italy can receive financial support of €300 for three months, as well as an additional €150 for each minor child. This funding is aimed at alleviating the living conditions of Ukrainians who find themselves in a difficult situation due to the current circumstances in Ukraine.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: 'Italy will support Ukraine as long as it is needed.'
Updating the rules for Ukrainians in Italy is part of a broader approach by European countries to support refugees and internally displaced persons affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Given the duration of the war, such legislative initiatives can play an important role in ensuring the social integration of Ukrainians and their access to essential services. It also underscores Italy's commitment to the international community in providing humanitarian aid and support to those affected by the war.
