Canadian PM Condemns US Interference Over Alberta Separatist Group
Canada Protests US Diplomatic Contacts with Separatists
According to Главком: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a strong condemnation of the United States for interfering in Canada's internal affairs. This follows revelations that US diplomats held at least three meetings with the separatist group 'Alberta Prosperity Project' (APP), which seeks independence for the oil-rich province. The APP plans to ask Washington for a $500 billion line of credit. This diplomatic friction occurs against a backdrop of long-standing tensions between Alberta and the federal government over energy policy, taxation, and the blocking of oil pipeline projects, which has fueled discontent in the province.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith noted that roughly 30% of the province's residents are dissatisfied with federal policies, a sentiment the APP has capitalized on. The movement emerged from this regional conflict, and its leaders have now begun collecting the approximately 178,000 signatures required to initiate a referendum on independence. However, Indigenous leaders have stated that any separation would be impossible without their consent, creating a significant hurdle for the separatists.
Independence Push and Broader Tensions
The situation risks further complicating Canada-US relations, which are already strained by trade disputes. Former US President Donald Trump has accused Canada of blocking aircraft sales and threatened a 50% tariff on Canadian aviation equipment. Meanwhile, APP representative Scott Bessent argued that 'people want sovereignty. They want what the US has,' highlighting the appeal of the separatist message to some Albertans.
"Going to a foreign country and asking for help to break up Canada-there's an old word for that, and that word is treason."
David Eby, Canadian Member of Parliament
The crisis in Alberta underscores deep internal divisions within Canada concerning regional autonomy and resource management. The growing separatist sentiment poses a serious challenge to national unity and could draw the United States into a domestic political conflict. American diplomatic engagement with the APP has heightened these risks, potentially damaging bilateral relations and increasing the chance of international discord.
