Kyiv Allocates 600 Million for Electrical Panel Repairs: Can This Prevent Fires?
Major Overhaul of Electrical Panels in Kyiv
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Kyiv City Council has approved a plan to spend roughly 600 million hryvnias on a comprehensive renovation of electrical panels and switchboards in the capital's apartment buildings. This move aims to stop widespread fires and power outages caused by decades of deterioration in residential electrical systems. The issue has been building for over ten years, and housing and utilities expert Oleh Popenko confirms the infrastructure has reached a critical breaking point.
Infrastructure Condition and the Urgent Need for Change
During discussions on the initiative, Popenko described the current state of the equipment as appalling and catastrophic.
“They were in a terrible, catastrophic condition. The need for a major overhaul was already raised 10 years ago. Then the war started-that's when it became a full-blown disaster, because panels began burning out and tripping constantly,” - Oleh Popenko.
He also pointed out that the average age of electricians servicing these buildings is approaching 60, highlighting a severe shortage of skilled workers in the field.
The allocated funds will be used to restore main distribution boards in basements and panel rooms on residential floors. Popenko believes this is an absolutely correct management decision that must be implemented as quickly as possible:
“This is a completely sound management decision. They are doing the right thing, and it should have been done already-they need to act now to finish by the end of the year,” - Oleh Popenko.
A telling example is a 70-year-old technician who continues to work despite his age, saying: “The current won't get me, I'm already old.” This story underscores not only the dire state of the infrastructure but also the pressing need to bring in new workers to ensure the safety of the capital's residents.
Investing significant funds into repairing electrical panels is a crucial step toward improving safety in Kyiv's residential buildings. Given that the problem has persisted for over a decade, timely action could prevent potentially dangerous situations. Furthermore, upgrading the infrastructure may help attract younger workers to the field, which would ultimately improve service quality for city residents.
As Kyiv embarks on this significant electrical overhaul, the broader context of Ukraine's utility infrastructure raises serious concerns. Experts warn of a potential impending utility collapse across the country, highlighting the lack of backup systems in many cities. This issue emphasizes the urgency of Kyiv's renovation efforts not just as a local necessity, but as part of a critical response to nationwide vulnerabilities.
