Cultural Relics Recovered and Donated to Museum

According to Главком: Kyiv Customs has transferred two Old Believer cultural relics to the communal institution 'Kirovograd Regional Council Museum of Art'. The items, which were seized during an attempt to illegally export them abroad, include a 19th-century metal icon 'Image of the Holy Prophet Elijah' and an eight-pointed copper kiot cross with attendant figures, dated to the 18th–20th centuries. Citizens attempted to ship these objects via international mail, but customs inspectors identified the violation and halted the illicit transfer during a routine check.

The production of such icons and crosses is linked to Old Believer foundry workshops. The kiot cross is a significant religious relic, traditionally kept in a special cabinet or kiot. Following a court ruling, the confiscated items were returned to state ownership. In accordance with a decision by the Expert-Fund Council of Ukraine's Ministry of Culture, these relics were then allocated to the museum's collection. The Old Believers are a religious group that split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century, and their artifacts hold significant historical value.

Kyiv Customs' Record in Recovering Cultural Property

This is not the first time Kyiv Customs has successfully intercepted and transferred cultural treasures to museums. Previously, customs officers handed over a Trypillian vase, bound for Switzerland, to the National Museum of History of Ukraine. Experts determined the vase dates to the Chalcolithic period, around the middle of the 5th millennium BCE. In total, Kyiv Customs has transferred 13 cultural items from the 17th–20th centuries to museums in Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Kirovograd regions. These include:

  • Icons
  • Body-worn crosses
  • Folding icons (diptychs/triptychs)
  • Porcelain items

These valuables were all seized from international postal shipments due to a lack of required export permits. After court decisions were issued, the cultural property passed into state ownership and was placed into museum collections, demonstrating ongoing efforts to preserve Ukraine's cultural heritage.

This event underscores the importance of protecting cultural heritage and the state's efforts to combat the illegal export of historical artifacts. Transferring the Old Believer relics to the museum not only enriches its collection but also ensures the preservation of important elements of Ukrainian history and culture for future generations. Strengthening such practices can help raise public awareness about cultural treasures and reduce instances of their illegal removal from the country.
