Clive Owen to Lead Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi's New Chernobyl Film
New Film Starring Clive Owen
According to Radiotrek — Світ: British actor Clive Owen will take the lead role in "Radioactive," the upcoming feature from Ukrainian director Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi. This co-production between Germany, Austria, and Ukraine is scheduled to begin filming in 2027. Set within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the story follows a BAFTA and Golden Globe winner-also an Academy Award nominee-as he aims to convey the character's complex emotions and personal struggles.
Owen confirmed his involvement during a press conference at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy, where he received a lifetime achievement award. A press release from Ukrainian production company Sota Cinema Group describes the film as a "nuclear noir." Ukrainian producers Oleh Kokhan of SOTA Cinema Group and Oleksiy Makukhin of Kleos Art are both actively contributing to the project.
Why This Project Matters
Slaboshpytskyi, an acclaimed Ukrainian writer-director, first gained international recognition with his debut feature "The Tribe" (2014)-the world's first film performed entirely in sign language. Kokhan shared his vision for the project, stating:
"War has shattered the cozy illusion of safety, and today the entire world is paralyzed by fear. But our film looks into the place where that fear becomes absolute. The director will capture not just the radiation levels, but the painful transformation of people inside the exclusion zone. If we fail to understand what happens to us at the epicenter of danger, tomorrow Geiger counters will crackle in every home from Tokyo to New York-only they won't be measuring radiation anymore, but the collapse of humanity itself."
With this approach, "Radioactive" promises to be a timely and thought-provoking film, tackling profound questions about human existence amid environmental and social disasters.
This project highlights the growing international collaboration within Ukrainian cinema, potentially drawing greater global attention to Chernobyl-related themes and ecological crises. Casting Clive Owen in the lead role signals the filmmakers' ambition to produce a work that resonates far beyond Ukraine's borders. It also stands to boost the visibility of Ukrainian filmmaking while sparking conversation about urgent social issues that demand worldwide discussion.
