EU Greenlights Cluster 6 for Ukraine, Moving Accession Talks Forward
Cluster 6 Opened for Ukraine and Moldova
According to МЗС: The European Union's Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) has approved the opening of Cluster 6-focused on external relations-for both Ukraine and Moldova. This decision sets the stage for an Intergovernmental Conference scheduled for July 14, during which the cluster will be formally launched.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed gratitude to Ireland, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council, and to all member states for this pivotal advancement in Ukraine's EU accession negotiations. He stated:
'Opening Cluster 6 will help strengthen Europe's collective security and deepen cooperation on foreign policy and defense.' Andrii Sybiha
Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine continues to meet its obligations under Cluster 6, with full alignment with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy remaining the top priority.
Why This Step Matters
The activation of Cluster 6 marks a critical milestone in the European integration journeys of both Ukraine and Moldova, underscoring the EU's commitment to supporting their aspirations. This development is also expected to positively influence the bloc's relations with other nations in the region, reinforcing shared security and stability across Eastern Europe.
While the approval of Cluster 6 is a significant step forward for Ukraine, it is essential to consider the challenges that remain. Recently, Hungary has taken measures that hinder the progress of Ukraine's EU accession talks by blocking the opening of the remaining clusters.
