Expanding the International Coalition

According to Главком: On May 11 in Brussels, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Panama, Switzerland, and Cyprus have joined the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. This growing alliance now includes 46 countries and three international organizations. Sybiha underscored the significance of this expansion, stating:

“It is important that our coalition is growing. I welcome the accession of Panama, Switzerland, and Cyprus. The coalition now comprises 46 countries and three international organizations.” – Andrii Sybiha

During the coalition meeting, the minister urged partners to take concrete action against Russia’s forced child transfers. According to official Ukrainian data, Russia has forcibly relocated over 20,000 children. Sybiha called on EU nations to impose entry bans on Russians involved in the deportation, indoctrination, and illegal adoption of abducted children.

New Sanctions Under Discussion

The meeting also addressed fresh sanctions introduced by the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union. The UK government announced an expansion of its sanctions list against Russia, targeting:

  • 85 individuals;
  • organizations implicated in war crimes against children.

The European Union is also preparing to broaden its blacklist of those responsible for the unlawful deportation and re-education of Ukrainian children.

The International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children continues to work actively to spotlight this grave issue and facilitate the children’s return to their homeland.

The coalition’s expansion reflects increasing global solidarity with Ukraine in safeguarding children’s rights amid the war. The addition of new member states may heighten pressure on Russia to return abducted children and help establish stronger international norms for child protection during conflicts.

As the coalition expands, the efforts to repatriate Ukrainian children gain momentum. Recently, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted that over 2,000 children have successfully returned home, showcasing the impact of international collaboration.
