Ex-Gazprom Executives Accused of Embezzling $100 Million for Gymnastics Center Linked to Alina Kabaeva
Investigation into Embezzlement at Gazprom
According to Главком: Former senior managers of Russia's state-owned energy giant Gazprom are suspected of embezzling roughly 8 billion rubles (approximately $100 million) during the construction of a rhythmic gymnastics center in Sochi. Known as the 'Heavenly Grace' academy, the facility is associated with former Olympic champion and public figure Alina Kabaeva. Investigators allege the theft occurred between 2016 and 2019, with funds intended for construction being siphoned off through fictitious contracts under Gazprom's 'Gazprom for Children' social program. This case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption within Russia's powerful state-controlled corporations.
Financing for the project was provided by 'Gazprom Investgazifikatsiya'. The main contractor was the St. Petersburg-based firm LLC 'GRSP Magnet', which was later declared bankrupt. The project was overseen for 'Gazprom Mezhregiongaz' by Elena Mikhailova, a former deputy CEO and board member of Gazprom. Investigators believe she may have organized the embezzlement scheme. Another suspect is Anatoly Yerkulov, ex-head of 'Gazprom Investgazifikatsiya', whom investigators consider the actual beneficiary of LLC 'GRSP Magnet'. Both suspects have been declared wanted after leaving Russian territory.
The Situation Regarding Alexandra Sayutina
Thirteen individuals are currently implicated in the criminal case, with some subject to international arrest warrants. On February 18, 2026, Moscow's Meshchansky Court ordered the arrest in absentia of Elena Mikhailova. According to investigators, the actual cost of construction work for the academy was likely only about 2 billion rubles (around $25 million). Construction of the 'Heavenly Grace' academy began in 2016, and the facility was commissioned in December 2022.
Separately, against the backdrop of this scandal, Russian speed skater Alexandra Sayutina attended President Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly. The International Skating Union (ISU) recognizes Sayutina as a neutral athlete. Her attendance at the event on February 29, 2024, sparked controversy. Russian skier Veronika Stepanova posted a photo on Instagram confirming Sayutina's presence. Broadcast footage showed Sayutina seated alongside Putin's allies and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine.
This case could have serious repercussions for Gazprom's reputation and its leadership, as it points to potential high-level corruption within one of the country's largest companies.
Meanwhile, the participation of athletes in political events like Putin's address fuels debate over the intersection of sports and politics in Russia, particularly given the country's international isolation and sanctions imposed due to its actions in Ukraine.
