Keith Kellogg's Pre-Meeting Counsel for Zelenskyy and Trump

According to ХВИЛЯ: Keith Kellogg, who previously served as Donald Trump's special envoy to Ukraine, has disclosed the details of the advice he gave to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of a crucial meeting with Trump on February 28, 2025. The meeting took place in the Oval Office, and according to Kellogg, misunderstandings arose because Zelenskyy disregarded his counsel, leading to a sharp escalation in tone. High-stakes meetings between U.S. and Ukrainian leaders are often meticulously prepared, given the complex geopolitical context.

Prior to the main event, Kellogg met with Zelenskyy that morning to offer two critical recommendations:

  • Avoid making the meeting contentious or confrontational.
“Don't turn this into a contentious or confrontational meeting,” Kellogg emphasized.
  • Use an interpreter instead of speaking English directly:
“I know you like to speak English. Use an interpreter. Because it gives you time to think before you answer.”

Kellogg stated that the initial closed-door, one-on-one conversation between Zelenskyy and Trump, before the press entered, went very smoothly. However, the situation grew tense once the cameras were turned on. Kellogg noted, 'He followed virtually none of the advice.' This led to unexpected moments during the public portion of the meeting, which may have impacted the subsequent diplomatic atmosphere. Kellogg also commented on Zelenskyy's choice of traditional Ukrainian attire, remarking, 'Who cares. It's his national dress.'

Consequently, Kellogg's guidance, intended to facilitate a successful dialogue between the two leaders, was largely unheeded, creating certain difficulties during the encounter. The failure to adhere to such preparatory advice in high-level diplomacy can risk derailing the intended focus and outcomes of a summit.
