Former Council Secretary Identifies Suspect in Cherkasy Police Killings: Details of the Conflict
Cherkasy Region Police Officers Killed
According to Главком: A former secretary of the Cherkasy City Council, Yaroslav Nyshchyk, has publicly named a man he alleges is connected to the murder of police officers in the Cherkasy region and presented his version of events. The attack on law enforcement resulted in the deaths of four officers, with one additional officer wounded. Nyshchyk identified the individual implicated in the killings as Serhiy Rusinov, the nephew of Ukrainian Hero Vasyl Serhiienko. Rusinov previously served in the 158th and 198th battalions during the full-scale war but was discharged from service due to health reasons. This incident highlights the volatile tensions that can persist for veterans returning from the front lines.
Conflict and Aftermath
Yaroslav Nyshchyk noted that Rusinov is the subject of open criminal cases in Russia. He also detailed a personal conflict between Rusinov and Vitaliy Storozhuk, a deputy of the Korsun City Council who has participated in pro-Russian events. The two men had reportedly exchanged mutual threats. Nyshchyk claims Rusinov set fire to Storozhuk's car, an act police classified as an attempted murder. However, Nyshchyk suggested there are suspicions the deputy may have set his own vehicle alight to frame Rusinov.
During Rusinov's apprehension in the Cherkasy region, he opened fire on law enforcement officers, leading to the deaths of four policemen:
- Major Serhiy Safronov, commander of the 1st platoon (rapid response) of the special purpose police company of the Main Department of the National Police in Cherkasy region;
- Major Oleksandr Florinsky, deputy commander of the special purpose police company of the Main Department of the National Police in Cherkasy region;
- Senior Lieutenant Denys Polovynka, inspector of the 1st platoon (rapid response) of the special purpose police company of the Main Department of the National Police in Cherkasy region;
- Major Volodymyr Boyko, a community police officer of the community interaction sector of the prevention department of the Cherkasy District Police Department.
One officer, Senior Lieutenant Oleksandr Shpak, was wounded.
Nyshchyk also expressed concern over the police's handling of the case. He questioned whether the leadership of the Cherkasy police understood that the deaths of the officers were on their conscience. In his view, the root causes of the tragedy lie with other individuals who will remain unpunished.
“May the deceased policemen and Serhiy rest in peace. The root cause lies with other people,” Nyshchyk stated.
He further emphasized that the recent events raise questions about the effectiveness of state programs for veterans' support and reintegration.
This tragedy has been a profound shock to a society already enduring difficult times. A police representative offered condolences, stressing that the four officers gave their lives to ensure the killer could no longer threaten peaceful citizens.
The incident underscores the complex situation in Ukraine, where conflicts between former military personnel and local officials can have severe consequences. The killing of the police officers has provoked public outrage, bringing issues of security and the challenges of veteran reintegration into sharp focus. An analysis of police conduct in this case and their accountability is likely to become a subject of public debate, as the tragedy exposes systemic problems related to veterans' adaptation to civilian life.
