Former Contractor Director Faces Trial for Embezzling 2.2 Million Hryvnias in University Roof Repair
Indictment Filed Against Former Company Director
According to Прокуратура Київ: The Shevchenkivska District Prosecutor's Office in Kyiv has submitted an indictment to the court concerning the former director of a private contracting company. The director is accused of embezzling 2.2 million hryvnias during a major roof repair project at a building of the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University in 2021. This case is part of broader efforts to combat corruption in public procurement, a significant challenge for Ukraine's institutions.
According to the case files, the accused managed the enterprise contracted to perform the major roof repairs on one of the university's buildings. During the project, she allegedly entered deliberately false information into the certificates of completed construction work, falsifying both the scope and the cost of the work performed. The total damages inflicted on the state budget exceed 2.2 million hryvnias.
Criminal Charges
The former director's actions have been classified under Part 5 of Article 191 and Part 2 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The upcoming trial aims to establish all the circumstances of the case and determine the defendant's liability for the alleged offenses.
This case underscores the critical need for stringent oversight of state funds allocated for construction and repair projects at educational institutions. In an environment of limited budgetary resources, corruption can severely impact the quality and accessibility of educational services. It is vital that such violations are thoroughly investigated and punished, which can serve as a deterrent to other contractors who might be tempted to commit similar abuses in this sector.
The issue of financial misconduct in educational infrastructure projects is not isolated. A recent case involving the embezzlement of 450,000 hryvnias during school shelter repairs highlights similar challenges faced by public institutions. Such incidents raise concerns about the management of state resources and the integrity of contractors.
