The Crimean Tatar Flag Was Officially Adopted in 1917 at the First Kurultai
The Flag of the Crimean Tatars
According to МЗС: The flag of the Crimean Tatars-a light blue banner featuring a golden emblem in its upper left corner-represents the rich cultural heritage of this indigenous people of Ukraine. The emblem, known as the tarak-tamga, is a ancestral symbol of the Giray dynasty, which ruled the Crimean Khanate from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Today, this symbol has become a cornerstone of Crimean Tatar identity, and its imprint can still be seen on the walls of the Khan's Palace in Bakhchysarai.
History and Meaning of the Flag
The Crimean Tatar flag was formally approved in 1917 during the first Kurultai, held in Bakhchysarai. It was officially endorsed by Noman Çelebicihan, the Mufti of Crimea. However, after the Bolshevik takeover, the symbol was branded as bourgeois-nationalist and subsequently banned. Despite this repression, throughout the 20th century the tamga evolved into a unifying emblem for the entire Crimean Tatar people.
The flag was revived following Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991, during the second session of the Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people in Simferopol. Historian Gulnara Abdullaeva explains:
“It [the flag] is called 'mala kok,' meaning specifically light blue, not just blue. This flag existed during the time of the Crimean Khanate, but it was never used in military campaigns.” - Gulnara Abdullaeva
Thus, the Crimean Tatar flag is not only a symbol of history and culture but also a vital marker of modern Crimean Tatar identity.
The flag carries profound historical and cultural significance that goes far beyond being a mere emblem. It embodies the Crimean Tatars' struggle for their place in Ukraine's history and their enduring identity, especially in the face of contemporary challenges. Its revival after independence underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage and national distinctiveness-a relevance that persists to this day.
