Latvian Response to Russian Disinformation Campaign

According to Главком: Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has rejected allegations from Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) that Ukraine is preparing to launch drone strikes from Latvian territory. The SVR claimed that Ukraine intends to deploy combat drones from Baltic states and that Latvia is providing airspace for such operations. Braže categorically labeled these assertions as a fabrication.

The Russian intelligence agency also threatened Latvia with 'just retribution' and strikes on decision-making centers within the country, alleging that Ukrainian Armed Forces drone personnel had arrived in Latvia. Braže emphasized that Latvia does not support any actions aimed at attacking Russia, calling the claims part of a deliberate disinformation campaign targeting her nation. She stated:

'Russia is lying again. This time, it is the Foreign Intelligence Service running a disinformation campaign against Latvia. FACT: Latvia is NOT providing airspace for attacks on Russia. This has been repeatedly explained to Russian representatives.' Baiba Braže

Belarusian Military Drills

Meanwhile, on May 18, the Belarusian Armed Forces launched military exercises focused on deploying Russian tactical nuclear weapons in field conditions. These maneuvers, conducted in coordination with Russia's military leadership, aim to test logistics chains and the technical readiness of units to handle specialized munitions, as reported by Glavcom.

Tensions between Latvia and Russia remain high amid these recent allegations and the Belarusian drills backed by Moscow. Latvia's firm rebuttal underscores the critical role of information security in a region already on edge due to military activity. The Belarusian exercises signal a potential escalation that could threaten not only the Baltic states but also broader European security.

Latvia's strong stance against Russian disinformation comes amidst rising military tensions in the region.
