Latvia Detains Russian Spies: How a Pro-Kremlin Network Gathered Intelligence for the FSB
Baltic 'Anti-Fascists' Network Members Apprehended
According to Главком: Latvia's State Security Service has detained at least three individuals linked to the 'Anti-Fascists of the Baltics' network, a group engaged in intelligence gathering for Russian security agencies. A criminal case against this network was initiated as far back as November 2022. While some members managed to flee to Russia or Belarus, two of them, Tatiana Andriets and Alexander Zhgun, are currently on trial.
Members of the group attempted to infiltrate drone manufacturing plants in Latvia, raising significant concerns among law enforcement. Among those detained is Igor Andreyev, who was involved in collecting personal data on individuals displaying Ukrainian symbols. The Latvian State Security Service also arrested Iveta Balode, the wife of Sergey Vasilyev. Previously, Yevgeny Oks, a friend of Vasilyev, had been detained.
Direct Coordination with Russian Intelligence
The 'Anti-Fascists of Latvia' group was overseen by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). Sergey Vasilyev transmitted the collected data to Russian national Sergey Kolesnikov, a former FSB officer. This case highlights the persistent activity of Russian intelligence services in the region and their attempts to undermine Latvian and regional security. The Baltic states have been on high alert for such espionage since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The apprehension of the 'Anti-Fascists of the Baltics' members demonstrates Latvia's heightened focus on national security threats linked to Russian intelligence operations. It also underscores the necessity for enhanced security measures and monitoring of similar networks across the region.
Latvia, like its fellow Baltic nations, remains a key target for Russian intelligence, emphasizing the critical importance of international cooperation in countering cyber threats and information warfare.
