G7 Leaders Open Up About Unhealthy Habits: Meloni Reveals She Quit Smoking
Health and Lifestyle Take Center Stage at the G7 Summit
According to Главком: During the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Évian, France, microphones caught an informal conversation among world leaders about healthy living. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni disclosed that she had quit smoking a month earlier, despite previously admitting in a book of interviews that she had resumed the habit after a 13-year break. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer then asked European Council President António Costa when he had stopped smoking. Costa replied:
“I quit in 2005... Never went back. That’s 21 years ago.”
Anti-Obesity Campaigns and Personal Examples
Interestingly, at an earlier peace summit in Egypt, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had promised Meloni he would find a way to convince her to quit smoking. Erdoğan has also launched a vigorous anti-obesity campaign, under which Turkish citizens can weigh themselves publicly on the streets. Meloni, for her part, acknowledged that smoking had helped her build a rapport with Tunisian President Kais Saied.
In this way, the leaders’ conversation at the G7 summit touched on important health and lifestyle issues, reflecting the growing attention these topics receive in global politics.
The discussion of healthy living among world leaders at the G7 summit underscores the importance of personal example in combating harmful habits and promoting health on a global scale. It also highlights the increasing role of politicians’ personal responsibility in public health matters, which may influence policy decisions and campaigns worldwide.
