Doctor Serdiuk Warns of the Dangers of Rapid Rewarming for Severe Hypothermia

Rapid heating in critical hypothermia
Лікар Сердюк підкреслює ризики швидкого прогрівання при важкій гіпотермії.

Actions to Avoid When Providing First Aid

According to Главком: Family physician Liudmyla Serdiuk has outlined critical mistakes to avoid when administering first aid to someone suffering from severe hypothermia. She emphasized that rapid rewarming can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious health consequences. Specifically, the doctor noted that the sudden dilation of blood vessels can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, and even cardiac arrest-a condition known as 'rewarming collapse'.

Liudmyla Serdiuk also warned that in cases of severe hypothermia, physical exertion can lead to sudden cardiac arrest due to rhythm disturbances. The primary signs of severe hypothermia include:

  • violent shivering;
  • pale, cold skin;
  • drowsiness;
  • lethargy;
  • slurred speech;
  • confusion;
  • an inability to perform simple tasks.

The physician urged people to refrain from certain actions when providing assistance. Specifically, one must not:

  • place the victim in a hot bath;
  • pour hot water on them;
  • position them near an open fire;
  • administer alcohol;
  • vigorously rub the skin;
  • use snow for rubbing;
  • massage the limbs in extreme cold.

Serious signs of a deteriorating condition are:

  • intense drowsiness and apathy;
  • confusion;
  • slowed breathing;
  • severe shivering or its sudden cessation.
“Liudmyla Serdiuk called for caution and adherence to guidelines when aiding victims of hypothermia.”

These medical recommendations highlight the vital importance of a correct response in hypothermia cases, especially during winter months. Knowing the core principles of first aid can save lives, as errors in these situations can lead to grave outcomes. This guidance is particularly relevant for those living in or visiting cold climates, where understanding proper emergency procedures is essential. In conditions of low air temperature, it is crucial to ensure the safety and health of both yourself and others by following the advice of medical professionals.
