Stepmother in Nikopol Faces Life Sentence for Murder of 10-Year-Old Stepdaughter
Tragedy in Nikopol
According to Главком: A 23-year-old woman in Nikopol has been detained on suspicion of murdering her 10-year-old stepdaughter. The incident occurred on February 19, when the unconscious child was brought to the intensive care unit of the Nikopol City Hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with a closed traumatic brain injury and a cerebral coma. Tragically, the girl died several hours later.
Initially, the stepmother claimed the child had fallen outside. However, she later changed her story, explaining she had become enraged after the girl took her makeup, struck the child, and then the girl fell. An examination of the girl's body revealed numerous bruises, hematomas, lacerations on the neck from fingernails, and signs of blows inflicted at different times. The stepmother admitted to using physical violence, claiming the girl 'did not obey' and was 'not her own.' This case highlights the often-hidden nature of domestic abuse, which can escalate tragically behind closed doors.
Family Situation
At the time of the tragedy, the child's father was at work and had not noticed anything suspicious about his daughter's condition. The family was not on the radar of social services, and due to remote learning, the child's physical state went unnoticed by teachers.
- The stepmother has been served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death.
- Prosecutors have filed a motion with the court for her to be held in custody.
- Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for malicious failure to perform duties of care.
- Investigators are examining evidence of possible torture.
The family includes two other young children: a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. Their condition is satisfactory, and they are now with their father.
This case underscores serious systemic failures in child protection in Ukraine, particularly regarding domestic violence. The lack of oversight from social services and educational institutions can lead to tragic outcomes. The investigation will continue to examine the circumstances to identify potential gaps in the child protection system and prevent similar cases in the future.
