IAEA Board of Governors Holds Special Session

According to Главком: A special meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors was convened in Vienna on January 30. The Netherlands initiated this session with the backing of 11 other nations, including:

  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • The United Kingdom

The primary reason for calling the meeting was the threat to nuclear safety posed by Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. This emergency gathering underscores the global concern over the potential for a nuclear incident during the conflict.

The Situation in Ukraine

In the early hours of January 29, temporary power outage schedules were introduced in the Ukrainian capital. Former Fuel and Energy Minister Ivan Plachkov stated that at least 80% of Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been damaged, with severe consequences for the nation's power supply.

IAEA representative Peter Pottman emphasized the severity of the situation, stating:

"Daily and continuous attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities in recent weeks have caused serious damage." - Peter Pottman

The IAEA's special session represents a critical step in the international community's response to the crisis in Ukraine, aiming to discuss measures for ensuring nuclear safety amid escalating risks. The safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants, including the Zaporizhzhia facility which is Europe's largest, remains a paramount international concern.

This meeting highlights the gravity of the global reaction to nuclear safety threats arising from the ongoing war. Given the extensive destruction of energy infrastructure, nuclear safety has become an increasingly urgent issue, as the unstable situation could lead to unpredictable consequences not only for Ukraine but for the wider European region. The international community continues to seek ways to enhance security and stability in the face of these growing threats.
