Partner’s Heatstroke Forces Marta Kostyuk Out of French Open Doubles
Marta Kostyuk Withdraws from Doubles Competition
According to Главком: Marta Kostyuk will not compete in the women’s doubles draw at the 2026 French Open. The reason: her partner, Romanian tennis player Elena-Gabriela Ruse, had to pull out due to heatstroke. Ruse retired from the tournament after failing to finish her first-round singles match against Magdalena Frech, trailing 6–7, 1–2.
Kostyuk and Ruse were scheduled to begin their doubles campaign on May 28 against the third-seeded duo of Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai. They have been replaced in the draw by Alycia Parks and Laura Pigossi.
Kostyuk Continues Strong in Singles
Despite the doubles disappointment, Kostyuk remains in the singles competition. In the second round, she defeated American Katie Volynets 6–7, 6–3, 6–3. After losing the first-set tiebreak 4–7, Kostyuk bounced back with a commanding second set, building a 5–1 lead that helped her level the match and eventually secure the win.
Her next opponent at Roland Garros will be Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic. Meanwhile, fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina has also advanced to the third round of the French Open after defeating Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo, winning the first set with a bagel (6–0).
Ruse’s withdrawal from doubles is a major blow for Kostyuk, as the pair showed promise for a deep run. However, Kostyuk has demonstrated resilience by continuing her singles campaign, highlighting her strength and determination.
This situation underscores the critical role of physical conditioning and adaptability in professional sports, especially during grueling events like Roland Garros.
While Kostyuk's withdrawal from the doubles event due to Ruse's heatstroke is unfortunate, her perseverance in singles continues to impress.
