U.S. Homeland Security Identifies Michigan Synagogue Attacker
Attack at Temple Israel Synagogue
According to Главком: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has identified the suspect in the March 12 attack on the Temple Israel synagogue in Michigan. The suspect, 41-year-old Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, was killed by security return fire. The incident left one security guard injured, while 30 individuals required medical treatment for smoke inhalation.
Suspect's Background
Ayman Ghazali was a Lebanese national who entered the United States in May 2011 on an immigration visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen. He obtained U.S. citizenship in February 2016 after filing for naturalization in October 2015. Ghazali lived in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn Heights and worked at a restaurant. His former wife filed for divorce in August 2024, and the couple had a child.
Prior to the attack, Ghazali posted images on social media of his deceased nephews, who were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Lebanese town of Mashghara. On the day of the attack, armed with a rifle, he crashed a vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue, causing a fire. Synagogue security opened fire and shot the attacker dead. A significant quantity of explosive materials was discovered inside Ghazali's vehicle.
Jennifer Rannazzisi characterized this incident as a 'targeted act of violence against the Jewish community'.
This assault highlights growing concerns over the safety of Jewish communities in the U.S., particularly against the backdrop of escalating violence in the Middle East. Ghazali's actions, believed to be motivated by a mix of political and personal grievances, are prompting law enforcement to review security protocols for religious institutions. Such attacks are part of a troubling pattern of targeted violence that necessitates continued vigilance and community cooperation with authorities.
