The Push for Mass Deployment of Unmanned Ground Vehicles

According to ХВИЛЯ: Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, has called for a large-scale influx of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to the country’s defense forces. According to him, these systems are already handling a wide range of frontline tasks, including logistics, evacuation, assault operations, and mine-laying.

Beskrestnov noted documented instances where positions were captured solely by robots, prisoners were taken by robotic units, and wounded personnel were successfully evacuated using UGVs.

Combat Effectiveness of UGVs

A year ago, the UGV market experienced a downturn, with robot companies being disbanded and some manufacturers exiting the industry entirely. This slump was driven by a lack of technical support and spare parts. However, the successes of units within the Khartia Corps and the Third Army Corps have since demonstrated the combat effectiveness of UGVs.

Beskrestnov stressed that the most critical challenge for UGV manufacturers is ensuring reliable communication with the operator-one that resists electronic warfare (EW) and maintains long-range connectivity.

“The most important, most urgent, and most difficult issue is communication,” he stated.

He also highlighted Ukraine’s limited mobilization resources, emphasizing the need to preserve human lives.

“If losing a UGV saves a human life, then it’s better to lose that ground drone,” he added.

The Ministry of Defense’s primary goal is to centrally supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine with high-quality, reliable solutions in large quantities. Beskrestnov believes that deploying unmanned ground vehicles is one of the most promising approaches to achieving this.

“Why should our pickup truck, risking its driver, drive across the battlefield to deliver supplies or ammunition when fast UGVs can do it?” he concluded.
