Updates to the 'Affordable Medicines' Program
According to Главком: The Ukrainian Ministry of Health has updated the list of medicines and medical products eligible for reimbursement under its 'Affordable Medicines' program. This expansion adds 37 new drugs in various dosages, increasing the total number of items covered to 748. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access in the country.
The program's 748 items now consist of:
- 621 medicinal products
- 59 insulin preparations
- 32 combination drugs
- 36 medical devices, including test strips for glucometers
For the first time, medicines containing the two active substances amoxicillin and ofloxacin have been included. All listed drugs can be obtained by patients for free or with a partial co-payment using an electronic prescription.
The Cabinet of Ministers has instructed the Ministry of Health and the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection to monitor drug prices. The government intends to fine pharmacies if violations in pricing are found, aiming to ensure medication affordability for Ukrainians, particularly in key treatment areas.
Medicines Now Covered by the Program
The updated program includes drugs for treating cardiovascular diseases, such as Telpres Plus (telmisartan + hydrochlorothiazide), Indap (indapamide), and Acecor Cardio (acetylsalicylic acid). It also covers medicines for infectious diseases in children, including Ospamox (amoxicillin) and Uniflox (ofloxacin).
Medications for mental and behavioral disorders, like Escitalopram Teva and Quetiron (quetiapine), are now included. For epilepsy patients, Levenium (levetiracetam) is available, and for Parkinson's disease treatment, Levocom retard Asino (levodopa + carbidopa) is covered. Drugs for diabetes treatment, such as Metafora -SR and Metformin, have also been added.
Specifically, the program now covers treatments for glaucoma, migraines, and pregnancy prophylaxis. New additions include Folic Acid Astra (folic acid) and medicines for treating malignant breast neoplasms, particularly Aralet (letrozole) and Exzemarin (exemestane). All these changes are aimed at improving Ukrainians' access to treatment and medical services.
The update to the 'Affordable Medicines' program is a significant step in providing patients with necessary medicines, which is especially critical given limited resources and the need for accessible healthcare.
With the increase in the number of reimbursable drugs, Ukrainians gain more opportunities to treat various diseases. The growing focus on controlling medicine prices also indicates the government's intent to ensure fair access to medical services for all citizens.
