Village Community in Chernihiv Region Leaves Moscow-Linked Church for Ukrainian Orthodox Church
Community Switches Allegiance to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine
According to Главком: In the village of Kharoshe Ozero, located in the Chernihiv region, the local religious community has voted to leave the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). This decision came during a general assembly of parishioners at the local St. Nicholas Church. Father Serhiy Chutchenko announced the news on his Facebook page, highlighting the significance of the move for the congregation.
Father Serhiy stated: 'We sincerely congratulate the religious community of St. Nicholas Church in Kharoshe Ozero on their free and conscious decision to join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. This is a major event in the spiritual life of the community, reflecting a desire for unity within Ukrainian Orthodoxy, loyalty to the homeland, its spiritual traditions, and the future of an independent Ukrainian Church.'
Drone Strike Hits Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
Separately, a significant incident occurred in Ukraine when a Shahed-type drone struck the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra overnight. The impact hit the altar area of the St. Stephen side-chapel, sparking a roof fire covering 800 square meters. A subsequent strike destroyed the dome and cross atop the Tower of St. John the Hut-Dweller.
These events unfold against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine and heightened attention to religious life in the country, which directly affects spiritual communities and their choices.
The transition of the Kharoshe Ozero community to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine reflects a broader national trend, as religious groups increasingly distance themselves from the Moscow Patriarchate. This shift may indicate a growing demand for independence and autonomy in religious matters among Ukrainians. Meanwhile, the attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra underscores the dangers Ukraine faces amid the war and the impact of these events on the nation's cultural and spiritual heritage.
The recent decision by the Kharoshe Ozero community to align with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is part of a larger movement observed across the nation. This trend is illustrated by the case of Medvedchuk's son, who also distanced himself from the Moscow-linked church, signaling a significant shift in religious affiliations as communities seek greater autonomy and national unity amidst ongoing conflict.
