Over a Million Hryvnias Worth of iPhone 17 Pro Max Units Seized at Border
Attempt to Smuggle High-End Smartphones into Ukraine Foiled
According to Главком: Customs officers at the Krakivets checkpoint intercepted a smuggling attempt involving 14 iPhone 17 Pro Max devices. Two women arriving from Poland employed different concealment methods to hide the gadgets:
- The first suspect, a 48-year-old resident of Lviv region, stashed 6 phones inside the dashboard panel of her Seat vehicle.
- The second woman, a 37-year-old Ukrainian citizen, tried to bring in 8 phones by hiding them under her outer clothing inside a Ford car.
The total value of the confiscated devices exceeds one million hryvnias. Specifically, the phones found in the Seat were valued at around 450,000 hryvnias, while those discovered in the Ford were estimated at 600,000 hryvnias. Official reports were filed, and the electronics were seized.
Suspects' Explanations and Previous Incidents at the Same Checkpoint
Both women provided accounts of their actions. The 48-year-old from Lviv stated she agreed to transport the premium devices across the border in exchange for a promised monetary reward. The 37-year-old Ukrainian citizen explained that she 'took the electronics in Poland at the request of third parties for quick cash.'
This is not the first such case at the Krakivets crossing. On June 14, 2026, authorities recorded an attempt to bring in over 14,000 lithium-ion batteries. The ongoing issue of illegal goods entering Ukraine underscores the need for stricter oversight and enhanced security measures.
These incidents highlight the persistent challenges of smuggling and customs evasion in Ukraine. As the electronics market continues to grow rapidly, illegal import attempts are likely to increase, demanding more rigorous monitoring by customs agencies. Given prior cases, it is clear that such violations are not isolated and require a systematic approach to prevention.
The recent seizure of high-end smartphones is not an isolated incident. In fact, the ongoing struggle against smuggling in Ukraine has seen various attempts to transport illegal goods across borders. For instance, a significant case involved the interception of nearly 14,600 lithium-ion batteries in a van. Such incidents reveal the persistent challenges faced by customs authorities in curbing illegal import activities.
