Paris’s Oldest Bridge Transformed into a Giant Cave Installation
The Pont Neuf Cavern Installation
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Paris’s oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, has been temporarily turned into an artificial cave through a project called Pont Neuf Cavern. Created by French street artist JR, the installation gives visitors a unique immersive experience that blends contemporary art with history. The soundscape was designed by Thomas Bangalter, a former member of the iconic duo Daft Punk. The installation is free and open to the public around the clock until June 28.
Features of the Installation
Completed in 1607, the Pont Neuf is the oldest standing bridge in Paris. Rising 18 meters above the Seine, the structure is made from printed fabric and air. Olfactory artist Sarah Buiss developed two scent compositions using geosmin and isoborneol, adding a new sensory layer to the project. Augmented reality elements were created in partnership with the tech company Snap, allowing visitors to interact with the installation on a deeper level.
Visitor feedback highlights the installation’s powerful impact:
-
“It feels like the city has disappeared. You know the river is right there, but for a moment, it seems like you’ve traveled far back in time.” - Léa Martin, 22-year-old art student
-
“I usually cross this bridge without even looking up. But today, I felt the stone under my feet. And even its smell. It makes you walk again like when you were a child.” - Michel Dupre, 67-year-old retiree
The installation pays homage to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who wrapped the Pont Neuf in light-golden fabric in 1985. That work was seen by around three million people. Artist JR highlighted the philosophical undertone of his project, saying: “You enter the darkness and come out into the light on the other side.” Nadia Benali, a 34-year-old visitor, added: “It’s absolutely amazing. Paris needs things that make people stop.”
After the project ends, the fabric used will be reused or recycled, underscoring the installation’s ecological focus. Pont Neuf Cavern has become a key element of Parisian cultural life, inviting locals and tourists to immerse themselves in new experiences and rethink familiar spaces.
The Pont Neuf Cavern installation not only impresses with its artistic vision but also highlights the importance of interactivity and sensory experience in contemporary art. It opens up new possibilities for visitors, allowing them to reinterpret and feel historical locations through a modern lens. Given the project’s success, similar initiatives are likely to emerge in Paris and other cities, drawing in new audiences and fostering cultural exchange.
