Kyiv Schools Extend Break Until February 1st: Plans for Completing the Academic Year
The State of Education in Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: Due to severe strain on the national power grid, all in-person schooling in Kyiv is suspended until February 1st. To ensure student safety and maintain educational continuity, authorities have set a final deadline of July 1st for completing the academic year in the capital. This decision reflects the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces in maintaining critical infrastructure during wartime.
Other regions are adapting based on local conditions. In Brovary, schools plan to resume in-person classes from January 19th, albeit with shortened lessons. Odesa's schools continue to operate normally with in-person attendance. Meanwhile, Zaporizhzhia persists with its unique model of conducting lessons in underground shelters to protect children from potential aerial threats.
Authorities in the Kharkiv region are considering a shift to online learning or an early start to holidays, with a final decision pending based on the evolving security and energy situation there.
"Our top priority is the safety of children, but we must also ensure the continuity of education." - Vitali Klitschko
The suspension in Kyiv is part of a broader national strategy to safeguard students during the energy crisis. Across Ukraine, different regions are tailoring their educational approaches to local realities, demonstrating a flexible and resilient model for schooling under extreme circumstances. These measures underscore a national commitment to preserving educational quality while prioritizing the security of every student.
