Germany Considers Nighttime Ban on Robot Lawnmowers to Protect Hedgehogs
Proposed Restrictions on Automated Garden Tools
According to Главком: German municipal authorities are advocating for a ban on the nighttime operation of robotic lawnmowers, citing a severe threat to the nation's hedgehog population. Research has confirmed the danger these machines' blades pose to the animals. Motorized leaf blowers and vacuums also present a risk. Furthermore, road traffic remains a significant cause of hedgehog fatalities. This move highlights a growing conflict between domestic convenience and wildlife conservation in suburban areas.
Germany's Declining Hedgehog Population
Since 2024, hedgehogs have been listed as 'near threatened' on the IUCN Red List. In Germany, their population has plummeted by 30% over the last decade. Scientists are also investigating whether the animals' ability to perceive ultrasound affects their safety around modern devices. Hedgehogs are a protected species in Germany, and capturing, injuring, or killing one can result in a fine of up to 65,000 euros.
Several cities, including Cologne, Leipzig, and Munich, have already implemented bans on automated mowers. The issue gained urgency after a hedgehog paralyzed operations at Arnstadt Alkersleben Airfield in Thuringia in late August, causing flight delays. Aircraft using this airfield can weigh up to 5,700 kg, underscoring how even small creatures can disrupt major infrastructure.
Nature conservation expert Anna Berger notes: 'Moreover, most hedgehogs with cuts are found days or even weeks after the incident, meaning they endure prolonged suffering, pain, and injury.'
The proposed nighttime ban is part of a broader environmental initiative to protect local fauna. The decline of hedgehogs in Germany is driven not only by technology but also by habitat loss, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive ecological approach. Such measures could serve as a model for other nations witnessing similar declines in wild animal populations.
