The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language is fighting against the imposition of Russian content

The new Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Olena Ivanovska, stated that her office is working to ensure that international streaming platforms, such as YouTube and Spotify, do not impose Russian content on Ukrainian users. She emphasized that this issue is about information security, not bans. Olena Ivanovska discussed this in an interview with 'Glavkom'.

Olena Ivanovska explained that Ukraine does not seek to block Russian content as it is ineffective in the context of modern technologies. Instead, the authorities aim to achieve changes in algorithms from the platforms so that Ukrainian content is visible and accessible, while Russian content is not promoted as the primary one. This approach has already been successfully implemented in other countries, including Poland.

“We are signing intergovernmental agreements to support Ukraine, regarding security tools, but culture is also a security tool, albeit not as visible, but still a very powerful one,” emphasized Olena Ivanovska, adding that language and culture are key to preserving Ukrainian statehood.

According to the commissioner, the creation of a government representative position for communication with international tech giants would help to more effectively address these issues. She noted that culture is no less a powerful security tool than military agreements.
