Ukraine's Energoatom Appoints New Supervisory Board Chair
New Leadership for Ukraine's Nuclear Power Giant
According to Главком: Rumina Velshi has been elected as the Chair of the Supervisory Board of Ukraine's National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NAEK) Energoatom. The decision was made during the first meeting of the newly formed board, whose seven-member composition-four independent members and three state representatives-was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in January. During this inaugural session, the board also supported the decision to terminate the powers of the company's Vice President, Yakov Kharmut.
Board Composition and Member Expertise
The newly appointed Chair, Rumina Velshi, brings over four decades of experience in the nuclear sector. She is the former President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and an internationally recognized expert in nuclear safety and regulation. The other members of the supervisory board are:
- Laura Garbenčiūtė Bakienė, an expert in corporate governance and the energy sector;
- Patrick Fragman, former CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company;
- Brice Buyon, a French diplomat;
- Vitaliy Kindrativ, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine;
- Maksym Malashkin, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
Furthermore, on February 25, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed Daria Marchak as a state representative to the board. She replaced Serhiy Sukhomlyn, who left his position voluntarily. This restructuring of the supervisory board signals a strong intent to enhance governance and drive the development of Ukraine's atomic energy sector. The appointment of a globally respected safety expert like Velshi is particularly significant given the ongoing challenges to Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
The renewal of Energoatom's supervisory board and the appointment of Rumina Velshi as its Chair represent a crucial step for the future development of nuclear energy in Ukraine.
Leveraging her extensive experience in nuclear safety, the new leadership aims not only to elevate safety standards but also to refine management practices. These changes are expected to positively impact the stability and operational efficiency of the company as it navigates the complex challenges currently facing Ukraine's energy sector.
