Vadym Yatsenko takes the helm

According to РБК-Україна — Lite: The appointment of Vadym Yatsenko as artistic director of the Hryhoriy Veryovka Ukrainian National Choir has sparked intense reactions online, including critical posts. Yatsenko acknowledged that the choir is a product of the Soviet system, but emphasized its role in preserving Ukraine's musical heritage. He stated:

“Is the choir a product of the Soviet system? Yes. Is the ensemble at fault for that? No. Were its outstanding leaders part of that system? Yes. Are they valuable to Ukrainian culture? Absolutely, yes.”

The choir's legacy and new directions

Founded during the Soviet era, the Veryovka Choir was led for five decades by Anatoliy Avdiyevsky. Yatsenko noted that the cult surrounding Avdiyevsky persists even a decade after his departure:

“On the third floor, there is a bust of Veryovka. Next to it is a photo of Avdiyevsky, and until recently, it was all surrounded by bouquets of artificial flowers. It’s a bit eerie.”

In his new role, Yatsenko has already initiated work on his first major project. He commented:

“In just two days, I’ve seen a lot. I realized I need to do even more. I’ve clashed with people who think they can act without my knowledge. I’ve launched the first big project! Will it be challenging? Oh yes! Will I follow the path already trodden? Oh no.”

Yatsenko announced his resignation from the Lviv Opera, where he worked for eight years, while continuing his involvement with the Homin Choir. He expressed his commitment to the team:

“Now there are two excellent ensembles, and I’ll fight for both. You’ve probably heard that I never let anyone insult my people. And we will definitely succeed.”

Yatsenko’s appointment has become a topic of public debate, and his initial moves in the position will be closely watched. This leadership change highlights the ongoing reexamination of Ukraine's cultural institutions, as the country balances its Soviet-era legacy with a renewed focus on national identity.

Yatsenko's transition from the Lviv Opera to the Veryovka Choir marks a significant shift in his career, reflecting the ongoing evolution of Ukraine's cultural landscape. This move comes on the heels of his predecessor's long-standing influence, which continues to spark discussions about the future direction of the choir.
