Iran's Assembly of Experts Appoints Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader Following Father's Death
Iran's New Supreme Leader Appointed
According to Главком: Following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Assembly of Experts has formally selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new Supreme Leader. The elder Khamenei was killed on February 28th in a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike. This marks only the second time this succession procedure has been invoked since the Islamic Republic's founding in 1979. The Assembly, a body of 88 senior clerics, last performed this duty over thirty years ago after the death of Ayatollah Khomeini, when Ali Khamenei himself was elevated to the role. The position of Supreme Leader holds ultimate authority over Iran's foreign policy, military, and judiciary.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Ali Khamenei's death, stating it resulted from a collaborative U.S. and Israeli operation. He asserted,
"This act serves not only as justice for the Iranian people but also as retribution for the numerous American and international victims of the Tehran regime and its proxy forces."
According to journalist Amit Segal, the Israeli Air Force dropped 30 bombs on the complex where Ali Khamenei was located, leading to his death.
Implications of the Leadership Transition
The change in Iran's supreme leadership is likely to lead to significant shifts in the nation's domestic and foreign policies. While Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to broadly continue his father's agenda, his personal views and strategic priorities could still influence Iran's relations with other states, particularly the United States and Israel.
Regional tensions are expected to remain high, as the fallout from Ali Khamenei's death has already triggered international responses and may reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
