According to ХВИЛЯ: Wreckage from a previously unseen variant of the Russian 'Lancet' loitering munition, marked with an RF designation, has been recovered near the Independence Monument in central Kyiv. Analysis by Defense Express indicates the debris featured an X-shaped tail and a pusher propeller. This marks the first confirmed use of this specific attack drone type by Russian forces against the capital. The debris, which included serial numbers and the RF index, also bore unusual colored circle markings typical of Russian V2U autonomous drones. This kamikaze drone is believed to be equipped with artificial intelligence for swarm operations and is configured for autonomous navigation, target acquisition, and strike execution without operator input.
Attack Details and Official Skepticism
The early morning attack on Kyiv involved a group of drones. Notably, the standard operational range of the 'Lancet' is typically limited to about 50 kilometers. While Russian sources have previously claimed ranges of up to 90 kilometers and a record of 136 kilometers, the distance from the Russian border to central Kyiv exceeds 200 kilometers, and from Belarus it is roughly 90 kilometers. The drone's warhead can carry up to 3 kilograms of explosives. The 'Lancet' has become a prominent weapon in Russia's arsenal, known for its use against artillery and vehicles near the front lines.
Advisor to the Minister of Defense, Serhiy Beskrestnov, has publicly doubted the 'Lancet's' ability to fly such a distance, stating these are short-range attack drones with small payloads designed for frontline targets.
He further suggested the debris might have been deliberately dropped from Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones. 'These UAVs physically do not possess such battery resources or radio control capabilities,' the advisor added. Beskrestnov also questioned the journalistic ethics of the outlet that published official police photos from the crash site, arguing their release could aid the enemy.
An investigation is currently underway, with authorities collecting information and analyzing radio signals, radar data, and imagery from interceptor drones.
