Zakopane introduces orange envelopes for parking: what awaits tourists
In one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland, the town of Zakopane has implemented changes to parking. In the city center, so-called 'orange envelopes' have appeared - parking spots designated exclusively for local residents. Tourists are not allowed to park in these spots, and violations of the rules may result in fines of up to 300 zlotys. This was reported by 'Hlavkom' citing The Warsaw.
During the tourist season, the streets of Zakopane are overcrowded. Due to the significant number of tourists in cars, local residents often cannot find a place to park near institutions, clinics, or schools. Therefore, the city authorities have taken action.
During the tourist season, the city of Zakopane is overcrowded. Due to the large number of tourists in cars, local residents often cannot park near institutions, clinics, or schools.
'Orange envelopes' are specially marked parking spots located at strategic points in the city, including near the town hall. Only owners of the Zakopane local resident card with an active Zakopiańczyk subscription can use these parking spots. The maximum parking time is 60 minutes, after which the driver must vacate the spot or pay for parking at the parking meter.
The city has also introduced new parking rates depending on the driver's status. According to these rates, different fees apply for local residents and tourists (higher). For example, in the busiest zone A (near Krupówki), the first hour costs 6 zlotys, the second - 7.20 zlotys, and the third - 8.60 zlotys. Notably, owners of the 'Zakopiańczyk' subscription can park for free in the paid parking zone for 120 minutes once a day or twice for 60 minutes. After using the free limit, they pay less than tourists for each subsequent hour.
Overall, the idea of orange envelopes has been positively received by the local community; however, there have been many critical comments online. The city authorities are accused of dividing people into 'locals' and 'outsiders' with these innovations. There are also fears that this approach may deter tourists from visiting Zakopane.
