Viktor Orban's Remarks on Ukraine

According to Главком: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made a sharp statement, declaring Ukraine an enemy of Hungary. This stems from Ukraine's lobbying for a ban on Russian energy, which Orban claims violates Hungary's fundamental interests. He asserted that those who promote cutting Hungary off from cheap Russian energy are not merely opponents, but enemies of the state.

Concerns Over the Conflict in Ukraine

Orban made these comments during a meeting with activists from his Fidesz party in the city of Szombathely. He also expressed concern about the potential involvement of Hungarian soldiers in the conflict in Ukraine, stating these developments could draw Hungary closer to war.

"We do not want to take part in this and see Hungarian youth [on the front] in Ukraine," - Viktor Orban.

The Prime Minister also discussed the possibility of Russia occupying Ukraine, emphasizing that the situation remains unstable.

According to poll results:

  • 55% of respondents believe Viktor Orban is no longer suitable for the position of Prime Minister;
  • only 4% of Fidesz party voters share this view;
  • 94% of Fidesz party supporters continue to back him.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 12.

Furthermore, on January 27, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to Budapest in connection with these comments. In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also summoned the Hungarian ambassador to discuss the situation. This diplomatic incident underscores the tension in relations between the two countries.

Viktor Orban's statements reflect a sharpening of tensions between Hungary and Ukraine, which could have serious consequences for bilateral relations. With parliamentary elections approaching, Orban is likely attempting to solidify his support among voters by emphasizing national interests and energy security. This conflict may also impact regional politics, as Hungary has strategic energy interests tied to both Russia and the European Union. Orban's stance has frequently put him at odds with other EU member states regarding support for Ukraine.
