Drone Attack on the World's Largest Gas Plant in Russia: Market Implications
According to glavcom.ua: The Orenburg gas processing plant, the largest of its kind in the world, has temporarily halted gas supplies from Kazakhstan due to a drone attack. The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan reported that a fire occurred after the attack, but it was quickly extinguished, Reuters reports.
The governor of the Orenburg region, Yevgeny Solntsev, noted that the plant sustained partial damage. This facility, owned by Gazprom, processes gas condensate from Orenburg and the Kazakh Karachaganak. Its capacity is up to 45 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 6.2 million tons of gas condensate/oil per year.
The attack on the plant is the first incident in the history of gas processing plants that are part of the Orenburg gas-chemical complex. Although the incident has been confirmed by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, details regarding the damages or the timeline for restoring operations are currently unavailable.
It is noted that the attack on the Orenburg gas processing plant is a unique case in its history. The fire that broke out as a result of the attack was quickly controlled, but an assessment of the damages and the determination of further steps for restoring the operation of the complex are currently ongoing.
