Final Results of Armenia’s Parliamentary Election

According to Главком: Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission has released the final tally from the parliamentary election, confirming a win for the party of incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. His political group, 'Civil Contract,' secured 49.7% of the vote, translating to 61 seats in the 101-seat parliament. Several other political forces also participated in the vote:

  • 'Strong Armenia,' the party of businessman Samvel Karapetyan, garnered 23.2% of the vote;
  • 'Armenia,' led by former President Robert Kocharyan, received 9.9%;
  • 'Prosperous Armenia,' the party of businessman Gagik Tsarukyan, earned 3.89% and failed to clear the 4% electoral threshold.

Protests and Public Backlash

Opposition groups, dissatisfied with the outcome, have staged protests demanding a fresh election. One demonstrator, boxer Israel Akobkohyan, initiated a hunger strike until new polls are called. The opposition alleges that 'systematic and large-scale violations of electoral law' took place. Although the Administrative Court rejected two lawsuits filed by 'Prosperous Armenia' against the Central Electoral Commission, the presiding judge acknowledged violations and suggested the need for a repeat vote. Following a recount, results from three polling stations were invalidated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Nikol Pashinyan on his victory, calling it a 'triumph for Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, and the right of its people to determine their own path.'

These elections mark a pivotal moment in Armenia’s political landscape, reflecting not only the vote tally but also the public’s reaction to it. The results highlight the country’s political dynamics, where the incumbent government retains substantial voter support despite opposition criticism. At the same time, the protest movement reveals deep divisions between the ruling party and its challengers, which could fuel further political instability. These developments may significantly affect Armenia’s future stability and its relations with neighboring states, including Ukraine, which has expressed support for the current Armenian government.
