Problems of Ukrainian Pensioners Abroad

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian pensioners living abroad face the problem of their bank cards being blocked. There are at least four reasons that can lead to such situations, as journalist Iryna Polyakova explained in a video guide.

Reasons for Pension Account Blocking

  • The most common reason for blocking a pension account is protection against fraud when carrying out atypical transactions. Banks implement such security measures to protect their clients from potential financial fraud.
  • The second reason for blocking can be debts and enforcement proceedings, even for small amounts, which can lead to account seizure.
  • The third reason is related to financial monitoring: if there are unusually large sums in the account, this can also become a ground for blocking.
  • The fourth reason is three incorrect PIN entries at the ATM, which automatically triggers card blocking.

Iryna Polyakova noted that for pensioners, this sounds like total absurdity, but

'rules are rules'

- Iryna Polyakova. The National Bank of Ukraine has mandated all financial institutions to verify the origin of funds, which can also affect the situation with the blocking of pension accounts for Ukrainians abroad. These circumstances create additional difficulties for citizens who rely on their pension payments while staying outside the country.

The situation with the blocking of cards for Ukrainian pensioners abroad highlights the importance of adhering to new financial rules and security measures being implemented in Ukraine. This can pose a serious challenge for those dependent on their pension payments, as account blocking can lead to financial difficulties. In an era of globalization and increasing mobility of Ukrainian citizens, it is crucial to find a balance between the security of financial institutions and the accessibility of services for their clients, especially for vulnerable groups such as pensioners.
