Sophia Yablonska: Choosing a Career in Obstetrics and Gynecology

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Last year, intern physician Sophia Yablonska took part in the first-ever electronic residency placement process in Ukraine, a system based on competitive ranking. Like many young doctors, she selected obstetrics and gynecology as her specialty, with Lviv’s First Medical Union as her top choice. As a result, she has spent nearly a year completing her residency at the maternity ward of St. Anne’s Hospital.

'I knew exactly which direction I wanted to pursue, and I chose obstetrics and gynecology without hesitation. For me, it’s more than just a specialty. It’s about responsibility during the most critical moments in a woman’s life, the trust she places in her doctor, and the need to combine clinical reasoning with sensitivity and empathy.' In her view, this stage of training is crucial not only for building clinical experience but also for developing medical judgment, composure, and the ability to stay focused under pressure. 'This path isn’t easy, but it’s deliberate. It requires constant self-improvement, ongoing learning, and a willingness to take on responsibility. At the same time, it gives you a clear sense of your place in medicine,' she added.

The Importance of Choosing a Specialty

Sophia Yablonska’s journey reflects a strong commitment to professional growth and accountability-key qualities in medicine. Her experience at St. Anne’s Hospital maternity ward serves as an example for other young doctors deciding on their specialization.

Her story highlights how critical specialty selection is in medicine and the role residency plays in shaping a young physician’s career. Her approach to learning and readiness to shoulder responsibility can inspire other medical students. In today’s healthcare environment, where patients need not only expert care but also compassionate treatment, traits like empathy and responsibility are especially valuable.
