A leptospirosis outbreak occurred in Jamaica due to Hurricane 'Melissa,' which hit the island at the end of October. According to the health minister, 9 confirmed cases of this dangerous bacterial disease have already been recorded, with another 28 individuals suspected of being infected. There are also reports of six deaths related to leptospirosis.

Hurricane 'Melissa' caused floods, landslides, and a large amount of rainfall, creating ideal conditions for the spread of the bacteria. The main source of infection was standing water contaminated with the urine of infected animals. The disease can be transmitted through skin contact with water or soil.

Leptospirosis has flu-like symptoms in the early stages, but severe forms can lead to serious complications. The minister urged caution when coming into contact with floodwaters and emphasized hygiene. It was highlighted that the hurricane caused massive damage to the country, destroying thousands of buildings and disrupting key sectors of the economy.
