After the war, only a third of refugees plan to return: what this means for Ukraine

Refugees plan to return to Ukraine
Більшість біженців вважають, що їхнє повернення додому може бути таємницею майбутнього.

The situation with Ukrainian refugees after the war

After the war, only about a third of Ukrainian refugees plan to return home, which indicates a decrease in hopes for a mass return. The head of the Sociological Group 'Rating', Oleksiy Antypovych, reported that according to the latest data, only 10% of respondents are firmly confident in returning to Ukraine. This raises concerns about the possible consequences for the country.

About a third of refugees express their intention to return to Ukraine after the war ends, however, the expert warns of serious challenges related to the demographic crisis in Ukraine. According to Oleksiy Antypovych, hopes for the mass return of Ukrainian citizens from abroad are rapidly fading, and the actual percentage of those who will return will be 'very minimal'.

Reasons holding refugees abroad

Among the main reasons that keep people abroad are:

  • lack of housing
  • economic uncertainty
  • future of children

These factors significantly influence the decision of Ukrainians to remain in foreign countries, which may have long-term consequences for the recovery and development of Ukraine after the conflict ends.

The situation with refugees reflects not only individual decisions but also general trends that can significantly impact the socio-economic situation in Ukraine. A decrease in the number of people willing to return home may lead to serious demographic changes as well as difficulties in restoring the country's infrastructure and economy after the war. These factors require attention from the government and international organizations to develop effective strategies for supporting refugees and stimulating their return.
