Stricter License Plate Enforcement: Police Issue Fines for Violations
License Plate Crackdown
According to Radiotrek — Світ: Authorities have ramped up monitoring of vehicle license plates and are warning drivers about penalties for non-compliance. The main infractions include:
- Non-standard license plates;
- Placing plates in unauthorized locations;
- Dirty or obscured plates;
- Upside-down or unlit plates.
The standard fine for these violations is 1,190 hryvnias. If a driver uses special plates-such as military, police, or diplomatic ones-without proper authorization, the penalty jumps to 2,550 hryvnias. A repeat offense within a year can result in a fine of up to 5,100 hryvnias. Additionally, a court may suspend the driver’s license for three to six months.
Example of an Offense
Recently in Ternopil, patrol officers stopped a Volkswagen driver who had altered the characters on his license plate using a black marker. He was issued a 1,190 hryvnia ticket. The man admitted to "fixing" the plate himself, but that did not help him avoid the penalty.
Law enforcement stated: 'A vehicle without properly installed or readable plates is not permitted to be on the road.'
The police also urge citizens to immediately report stolen plates, as these can be used in criminal activities. According to lawyers, if photo or video evidence is included in the case file, appellate courts typically uphold the penalty. Drivers can challenge a fine in court within 10 days of receiving the citation.
This increased focus on license plates highlights a broader effort by police to improve road safety and tackle vehicle-related offenses. At the same time, the initiative aims not only to punish but also to prevent crimes linked to plate theft. Drivers should stay vigilant and follow the rules to avoid fines and other legal consequences.
