Poland's New Attack Drone

According to Главком: Poland has finalized the design of its own indigenous attack drone, named the PLargonia, which is modeled on the 'Shahed' type. The drone is now in its final development phase. Concurrently, Warsaw has established a Center for Autonomous Systems, aimed at integrating the resources of the military, scientific institutes, and the defense industry to accelerate innovation.

Major Funding and Investment Plans

In 2024, Poland plans to spend approximately €5.8 billion on drones, autonomous systems, and counter-drone defenses. A portion of this funding is expected to come from the European Union's SAFE rearmament program. However, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed a law that would have secured €43.7 billion from the EU under this scheme. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated that the government will seek alternative mechanisms to access these crucial funds.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, a Polish government representative, underscored the strategic priority of unmanned technology across all domains:

“Poland is betting on the development of unmanned technologies across all domains: from aerial to maritime and land-based systems.” - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz

He added that “such solutions are set to become a key component of a modern army.”

This push into drone technology reflects Poland's broader ambition to rapidly modernize its armed forces in response to regional security challenges. The creation of the Center for Autonomous Systems highlights the importance Poland places on collaboration between the state and private sector in defense. In an era of heightened geopolitical instability, such investments in cutting-edge military technology are considered vital for ensuring national security and maintaining a technological edge.

As Poland accelerates its drone development, the recent decision by President Nawrocki to veto significant EU defense funding has sparked controversy. This move could potentially impact the country's ambitious plans for military modernization.
