Roman Kofman: The Life and Legacy of a Distinguished Conductor

According to Главком: Roman Kofman, a National Artist of Ukraine and renowned conductor and composer, has passed away at the age of 89. His death marks a significant loss for the classical music world, both in Ukraine and internationally. He served as the principal conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine and the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra. Kofman also held the position of General Music Director at the Bonn Opera in Germany.

Born in Kyiv, Kofman studied at the Kyiv Conservatory, mastering both violin and conducting. His career took a major step in 1990 when he became the principal conductor of the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra. From 2003 to 2008, he was the General Music Director of the Bonn Opera, where he also led the Beethoven Symphony Orchestra. He continued to lead the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine until 2016.

Artistic Work and Accolades of Roman Kofman

Beyond his conducting, Kofman was also a film composer, creating scores for movies such as 'Only Three Weeks' (1971) and 'Laurels' (1972). In 2011, he published an artistic book titled 'Pastoral Symphony, or How I Lived Under the Germans'. His distinguished service was recognized with Germany's Officer's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Ukraine's Order of Merit, Third Class. In 2011, he was also nominated and shortlisted for Ukraine's National Taras Shevchenko Prize.
