Bithumb Exchange's Billion-Dollar Bitcoin Blunder: Customers Mistakenly Sent Billions
Major Error on Cryptocurrency Exchange Bithumb
According to Главком: On February 6, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb made a staggering error, distributing Bitcoin worth tens of billions of dollars to customers instead of the small cash rewards intended for a promotional event. This technical glitch resulted in the accidental distribution of over 620,000 Bitcoin, with a total value of approximately $44 billion. While the promotion's terms promised users a minimum of 2,000 Korean won (about $1.37), some recipients found themselves credited with no less than 2,000 Bitcoin each. This incident highlights the potential for human and system error even on major, established trading platforms.
Bithumb managed to recover 99.7% of the erroneously distributed funds. Trading and asset withdrawals for the 695 affected clients were restricted within 35 minutes of the incident's discovery. During the event, the price of Bitcoin on Bithumb briefly plummeted by 17% to 81.1 million won ($55,400), but it later recovered and was last trading at 104.5 million won ($71,400).
Ripple Effects in the Crypto Market
Bithumb is the second-largest player in South Korea's crypto market, trailing behind the leading exchange Upbit. This blunder occurred against a backdrop of broader market turbulence; the total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies has fallen by $467.6 billion since January 29. On February 3, Bitcoin itself had dropped to its lowest level since the re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump in early November 2024.
In an official statement, Bithumb emphasized that this incident was not related to external hacking or security breaches, assuring users that there are no issues with the system's security or the management of client assets. - Bithumb
This case underscores the inherent vulnerabilities in cryptocurrency management systems and the critical importance of rigorous controls during promotional campaigns. Although Bithumb acted swiftly to rectify the situation, the episode serves as a serious reminder of the operational risks associated with digital assets. The mistake may also impact user trust in the exchange and, more broadly, in South Korea's highly competitive crypto market, where platform reliability is a key differentiator.
