Introducing the HoNi BAJR Scanning Reflectarray Antenna

According to НВ — Техно: On June 9 at 11:00 AM, a prototype scanning antenna featuring a reflective array was unveiled, designed specifically for military satellites operating in low Earth orbit. Dubbed the Hosted Nimble Beamforming Anti-Jam Reflectarray (HoNi BAJR), this device holds significant promise for military communications. Notably, the new antenna consumes roughly 95% less power than conventional antenna systems.

The HoNi BAJR employs a reflective surface with individually controlled elements, enabling signals to bounce off the surface, shift phase, and be directed toward a specific receiving antenna. Its compact size allows the antenna to be mounted on small satellites, a critical factor in modern military technology. During testing, the antenna demonstrated the ability to operate at wide angles and simultaneously serve multiple users.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Engineers on the project aimed to create broader interference suppression zones. However, initial results in generating these zones were mixed. One major technical hurdle remains antenna calibration. Michael Creighton, a member of the tactical satellite communications group at the laboratory, noted:

He added that 'the team is exploring ways to achieve high performance with less expensive equipment and is preparing for potential threats before they become serious issues.' Creighton also emphasized that 'building the hardware itself is challenging, but integrating the new technology into a complete system that meets specific mission requirements is even harder.'

The team plans to refine signal-shaping methods, improve calibration procedures, and investigate possible use cases for the new antenna. The development of HoNi BAJR opens up new possibilities for military satellite communications, potentially boosting the effectiveness of future military operations.

This new antenna represents a major step forward in military communications, as its reduced power consumption and compact size could greatly enhance the mobility and efficiency of satellite systems. Yet, challenges related to calibration and technology integration demand further research and development to fully realize its potential. Successfully deploying such technologies could transform military operational approaches, ensuring more reliable communication in complex environments.
