Bild Identifies Three Major Crises Facing Russia as Putin's Strategic Plans Collapse
Assessing the Battlefield and Russia's Internal Situation
According to Главком: Five years into the war, German outlet Bild has examined the conditions on the front lines and within Russia, highlighting three severe setbacks for Vladimir Putin:
- staggering troop casualties;
- loss of previously captured territory;
- the conflict spilling back onto Russian soil.
Analysts concluded that Putin's original strategic calculus has failed completely.
Russian Military Casualties and Shifts in Territorial Control
Russia's military is losing roughly 35,000 soldiers killed or wounded each month. Independent Russian journalists estimate total occupier deaths at 352,000, with around 217,800 fatalities confirmed by name. Since the start of the year, overall Russian army losses have exceeded 141,500 personnel, including over 83,000 irreversible losses. For five consecutive months, the Russian army has been losing more troops than it can recruit, effectively halting any growth in its total manpower.
Regarding territorial changes, since January, Russian forces have captured only about 220 square kilometers of Ukrainian land-a mere 0.04% of the total. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Defense Forces have liberated 189 square kilometers in recent months, achieving their greatest battlefield successes since the Kursk operation in August 2024. Starting in November 2025, Ukrainian troops reclaimed a large portion of Kupyansk in Kharkiv region, and during the winter and spring of 2026, they liberated over 400 square kilometers in southern Ukraine. Since late April 2026, Ukrainian forces have also freed several settlements in western Zaporizhzhia region.
A key factor influencing these developments has been the regular Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries, military bases, and critical infrastructure deep inside Russia. The Moscow metropolitan area has come under attack, underscoring how the war has returned to Russian territory. As Oleksandr Syrskyi noted,
“Ukrainian unmanned systems units play a significant role in this.”
In summary, conditions on the front and within Russia point to serious challenges for Vladimir Putin. According to Bild's analysts, the Russian president's strategic bet
“has completely failed, and the war of attrition is increasingly hitting Russia itself.”
These outcomes cast doubt on the sustainability of Russia's military strategy and could trigger internal political shifts within the country. Rising casualties and battlefield failures may provoke negative reactions among the population and opposition forces, ultimately affecting Putin's legitimacy. At the same time, Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensives demonstrate the growing ability of its Defense Forces to hold their ground and strategically push back the enemy.
As the situation in Ukraine evolves, the implications of these military setbacks for Putin's regime are becoming increasingly dire.
